KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL - Endeavour's crew of seven astronauts flew to Kennedy Space Center this afternoon for their mission to the International Space Station set for liftoff Friday evening, if the weather permits. Endeavour is scheduled to launch at 7:55 p.m. EST on a 15-day mission to deliver science equipment and supplies to the orbiting complex and repair a balky solar array joint that has been operating in a reduced capacity since September 2007. The only concern as launch day approaches is the possibility that thick clouds and rain in the area will force a delay to the start of STS-126.

LOS ANGELES, CA - NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander has ceased communications after operating for more than five months. As anticipated, seasonal decline in sunshine at the robot's arctic landing site is not providing enough sunlight for the solar arrays to collect the power necessary to charge batteries that operate the lander's instruments.

Former Astronaut Bob Cabana Takes Over At Kennedy Space Center  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Bob Cabana, former NASA astronaut and Kennedy Space Center Director KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL - Bob Cabana commanded space shuttle Endeavour ten years ago on STS-88. His job was to lead the first-of-its kind mission to begin assembly, in space, of the International Space Station. For the first time in history, a multitude of nations came together to create a space station so large it requires people to manually put all the pieces together in orbit. His mission was the first of many assembly flights to follow and perfection was a necessity. On October 29, Cabana accepted a challenge even greater than kicking off the station's twelve-year assembly process when assumed the helm of leadership of Kennedy Space Center at a time when the station is nearing completion and the shuttle nearing the end of its life.

Ares I and Ares I-X NASA sought to dispel rumors of a "revolt" inside Project Constellation today, holding a teleconference for the news media to provide an update on the progress of Ares launch vehicle development and the status of the Ares I-X test flight scheduled for mid-2009. The briefing came in the wake of several news reports highly critical of the agency's management of the Ares program and the design of NASA's new launch vehicle.
